FAQs about River Rafting
What is white water river rafting ?
River Rafting is journeying on the torrential river on an inflatable rubber boat. A river trip is often an adventure but not always. An amateur with a little sense of adventure can equally enjoy it. You are provided with a life-jacket to put on all the time while on the river. You are also provided with a crash helmet. A trained professional river guide heads the rafting team. All camping equipment and meals are provide by the outfitter.
Where and when can rafting be done ?
Rivers where rafting is possible in India:
Ganges (Rishikesh), Indus (Leh), Teesta (Sikkim), Beas (Kullu), Brahamputra (Assam).
The early stages of the Ganga offer the exhilarating Alakananda and the Bhagirathi rivers. While the Indus snaking through Ladakh and the Zanskar and Chenab in Kashmir are very different river running experiences, other rivers like the Sutlej, Beas and Yamuna are also a sporting challenge.
The best and most popular river is the Ganges - particularly the stretch between Kaudiyala and Rishikesh. Rafting can be done here from Mid September upto Mid May.
Who provides the equipments and guide ?
High quality rafts, safety equipment (life jackets, helmets etc) and internationally trained guides are provided by the Company organising the river rafting trips and running the camps.
I have never done rafting before !
The Ganges at Shivpuri (all the year round except the monsoons) and the Beas at Kullu (in the summers) is the best place for first timers. From the novice to the most intrepid of adventurers, there is most certainly a package suited for each experience level even for beginners, amateurs, novices and first timers. You can choose from the more technical river sections of class IVs for a true adrenaline rush, or simply opt for less strenuous, and milder trips that are perfect for beginners and families.
I do not know swimming !
River rafting on Grade 2 and 3 rapids does not require swimming ability. A personal flotation device which is provided will keep you buoyant if you happen to swim from the raft. There are plenty of calm "recovery pools" to keep you from floating down river. Each raft has a trained river runner and guide alongwith. Class 4 requires good swimming ability since participants must be able to swim back to the raft or shore before the next rapid.
What do I need to carry for a rafting trip ?
You need to bring shorts, swim suit, cap, t-shirt, keds, sneakers, beach sandals, windcheater, sun block, sun shades, flashlight, and a dry set of clothes for your ride home. Prepare to have everything that you wear to get wet. Also please do not bring valuable items (i.e. expensive clothes or shoes, jewelry, non-waterproof cameras or other items) on the raft.
Do I need to be in a group ?
It is always more fun if you have your own group of at least four people. Otherwise you can always come alone or as a couple and you will get to join a group at the Camp.
What are the safety standards ?
White water rafting expeditions in India are organized and managed by professional Indian teams who have trained abroad in some of the most difficult water stretches of the world. The helmsman on board is familiar with the topography of the river and its obstacles. Life jackets and crash helmets are worn by all with back up arrangements for rescue, evacuation and medical attention on the river bank. Most important of all, the guide is suitably qualified so that panic is avoided if there is a mishap. The rafts are imported and have inflatable compartments with vulcanised rubber bodies reinforced by nylon fabric beneath an exterior of neoprene. This degree of strength for the raft makes it tolerable to battering by waves and rocks.

Take the plunge
Cliff jumping and fun? You bet. Much as you shake your head at the unnerving thought, you can’t shake the sport away. It’s the latest in the adventure sport bandwagon to have caught the fancy of young India. Corporate wizkids and adventure enthusiasts are making a beeline for tour operators offering this extreme sport, cementing its status as the latest fad.“Cliff jumping,” says Pranav Kukreti, avid cliff jumper and director, marketing, Treks ’N’ Rapids Private Limited, Delhi (a company which offers cliff jumping), “is the mellower cousin of base jumping. Here an adventurer jumps from a 30 to 40 feet high cliff (rock or bridge) into a waterbody (river/ stream/ lake/sea).” The only difference between base jumping and cliff jumping is that base jumping requires proper training, is more technical in nature and requires combined skills in aero sports.
Cliff jumping, however, is more popular in the West and is now slowly catching on in India. Initially it was looked upon as an ‘add-on’ sport and was combined with the white water rafting packages. But having emerged out of the shadows of rafting today, it has come into its own. The main attraction of cliff jumping is perhaps the buzz you feel once you have completed your first jump.
Nimish Pant, business change consultant at Tata Consultancy Services, Delhi, recalls, “The first time, the cliff looked as though it was mocking us, daring us to climb and take the plunge. The reluctance of the others present added to the challenge. I guess it was a temptation I couldn’t resist.” That’s probably when the seeds of his affair with the cliff were sowed.
For Aakash Mehra, a systems analyst at Newgen Software Technologies Limited, Bangalore, it was a different experience. “I went on a rafting trip and felt somewhat dissatisfied. So I decided to try cliff jumping and it left me asking for more,” he chuckles.
In fact, cliff jumping works as icing on the rafting cake. The adrenaline rush is tremendous and you can hear your heart pounding. But once you take the plunge, operators promise you’ll come back for more. “After having surfed skillfully, negotiating the rapids with ease, jumping from a cliff into the waters provides the grand finale,” adds Pant.
Cliff jumping is mostly done in mountain rivers (as part of a rafting trip) or in the sea. The platform for cliff jumping is usually a simple clearing in the bushes and other vegetation along the cliff above a river, sea or lake. If you are a beginner, it helps to choose a small harbour where the depth of water is clearly indicated. Then, select an area where you want to land, place one foot in front of the other and push off confidently.
When flying through the air, use your arms to steady yourself, making sure that you pull them to your sides just prior to hitting the water. Though there is no formal training available, yet at the minimum, first-time jumpers are usually taught how to enter the water correctly so that they don’t hurt themselves. In fact, the secret to a successful landing in the water is to be as straight as a ruler when in air, keeping the hands away from the face.
“Good supervision and guidance along with proper first-aid facility in place are recommended,” points out Kukreti. It’s also essential to have the right equipment while attempting cliff jumping. Shoes are essential. Protective clothing for the arms and legs such as a wet suit should always be worn. This is to help protect against barnacle rashes (a painful affliction which occurs when the skin comes into contact with barnacle-covered rocks). Moreover, it’s advisable to bring along experienced trainers, a towel and of course, a life jacket.
So what are you waiting for? If you want a break from the daily grind, go, jump.

High Spirit terminology being used for the River Features
High Spirit terminology being used for the River Features:
Run A section of river that can be boated.
Put-In River access where a trip begins.
Take-Out River access where a trip ends.
Current Moving water.
River Right The right side of the river when facing downstream.
River Left The left side of the river when facing downstream.
River Rating A measure of the difficulty of a rapid or a river.
High Water River flow above an expected average. Makes the currents faster. Some rapids get easier, others become more difficult.
Low Water Flows below an expected average more rocks and obstacles may show, rapids become more technical.
Rapid Where there's whitewater! Water flowing through a shallower, constricted, or steeper section forms a rapid.
Hole, Hydraulic Where water flowing over a rock or other obstacle flows down, then back onto itself in an eruption of whitewater.
Laterals A wave or hole peeling off an obstacle at an angle.
An opening Where water can flow through, but a solid object such as a person or boat cannot. Usually formed by trees on the banks, or by rocks on top of one another with water flowing through them. One of the most dangerous river features.
Pool-Drop A type of river in which rapids are separated by calmer pools of water, sometimes more forgiving than continuous gradient rivers.
Standing Wave, Haystack A wave in a river formed by obstacles on the river bottom, where the wave stands still relative to the bank.
Eddie Water flowing upstream behind a rock or other obstacle. Eddies often provide a safe place to get out of the current.
Eddie Line \ Fence Where the water flowing upstream passes the water flowing downstream.
Gradient The "steepness" of a river, measured in feet of elevation loss per mile of river.
Flow The amount of water passing a point in the river, measured in Cubic Feet per Second (CFS).

Grading of Rapids
As with trekking, mountaineering and other adventurous sports, river rafting too has been classified and graded in terms of degrees of difficulty. The degree of difficulty would depend on the river gradient and its rapids.
The following are the grades of rafting:
Grade I: Easy
Small moving water, which is very easy to negotiate.
Grade II: Novice
moving water with occasional rocks.Moderately difficult.
Grade III: Intermediate
moving water with rocks. high irregular waves, narrow passages, action required.
Grade IV: Advanced
Large falls but not continuous. very difficult, powerful waves
Grade V: Expert
long continuous unbroken stretches of rapids. extremely difficult, long violent & highly congested.
Grade VI: Suicidal
The hardest grade with ultimate risk to life. It is also called the Suicidal grade.

Safety while rafting
Every raft for river running is equipped with a first aid box and other essential life saving devices, which is essential part of rafting sports. All rafting companies have a panel of doctors in case of any eventuality.Younger children under the age of 14 years are not allowed to do rafting. Teenagers above the age of 14 years are allowed to raft on certain sections of the river but safety is given the first priority. All the members of the rafting team are given the complete safety briefing at the start of the trip. They are provided with life jackets, helmets waterproof dry bags and complete camping gear.
Types of Raft
Rafts are basically unsinkable and inflatable boats.
The boats are of two kinds:
